Southern Taiwan: My Journey Growing up in Kaohsiung, and How It Became My Sanctuary of Healing

Hi!

It's been ages since my last blog post! I'm gearing up for an adventure, leaving behind my slump 😌 It’s only up from here! Grateful for the steadfast souls who stood by me when I needed it most. I'll always cherish and pay it forward to those who've had supported me.

As you also heard about recent earthquakes in Taiwan, I’ve made some donations to help with the efforts to pay it forward and help those in need. My heart goes out to the people affected by the earthquake, sending prayers for their well-being and safety. Sharing a little bit of my backstory and what brought healing and kickstarted Memories of Formosa!

Growing up in the vibrant city of Kaohsiung, nestled miles south of Taipei, has been a journey filled with warmth, culture, and endless inspiration. As the second-largest city in Taiwan, Kaohsiung holds a unique charm that has shaped my perspective and nurtured my growth.

One of the most remarkable aspects of life in Kaohsiung is the genuine friendliness of its people. From a young age, I was surrounded by a community that welcomed strangers with open arms and treated them like family. I’ve witnessed strangers guide tourists when they’re lost, returned untouched lost wallets

Kaohsiung's rich cultural tapestry also played a significant role in shaping my identity. The city's historical landmarks, such as the stunning temples and ancient streets, served as living reminders of our heritage and traditions. Each visit to these sites was a journey through time, deepening my appreciation for the stories woven into the fabric of our city.

During my toughest times, experiencing the aftermath of a layoff, Kaohsiung became my sanctuary. It was where I found peace and healing, nurtured by the embrace of family and the supportive community around me. Their unwavering support and love gave me the strength to persevere and navigate through challenges with resilience.

As the heartbeat of southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung is a bustling hub of creativity and innovation. The vibrant art scene, exemplified by places like the Pier-2 Art Center, sparked my imagination and instilled a sense of wonder. It was here that I learned the power of artistic expression in bridging communities and fostering dialogue.

Growing up in Kaohsiung was a testament to resilience and adaptability. The city's evolution, from its industrial roots to a modern metropolis, mirrored my own journey of growth and transformation. It taught me the importance of embracing change while staying rooted in our values and traditions.

Today, as I look back on my formative years in Kaohsiung, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me. The city's warm embrace, vibrant culture, and friendly people continue to inspire me, no matter where life takes me. Kaohsiung will always be more than a place; it's a part of who I am—a testament to the beauty of southern Taiwan and its enduring spirit.

For those riding life's rollercoaster, hang in there! Wishing you a speedy switch to smoother tracks and a cozy hideout where healing throws a party.

Love,

Annie
