Taiwan's Journey
Over the years, Taiwan has transformed from an authoritarian regime to one of Asia's most vibrant democracies. The island's democracy movement, ignited in the 1980s, has been driven by the tireless efforts of activists, scholars, and ordinary citizens who yearned for freedom.
As I reflect on Taiwan’s democratic journey, I am filled with gratitude for the freedoms I enjoy today. These freedoms were secured through the bloodshed and sacrifices of my ancestors. They endured hardships and faced immense challenges to secure the rights and liberties I often take for granted.
My grandparents and parents lived through times of oppression, where expressing dissent could lead to imprisonment or execution. I often hear stories from them about the ruthless nature of the regime, recounted with a mixture of bitterness and defiance. What we all care about is 安居樂業 (a peaceful and prosperous life), 自由民主 (freedom and democracy).
My family has been in Taiwan for more than ten generations. This is our home, and no one can tell us otherwise.
Even though I am not in Taiwan right now, witnessing the people back home standing up for their rights, especially after a controversial law was passed without due process, makes me worry but also super proud that we have the right to protest and make our voices heard. I hope we are free from interrogation, threats, and violence from the authoritarian regime across the strait.
